LANGUAGE CONTEXT

Sundanese and the Languages of Java

Java is multilingual. Sundanese is an Austronesian language with about 32 million native speakers, mostly in the western third of the island, and it is a distinct language from Javanese, Indonesian, and the other languages around it.

01

Where Sundanese is spoken

Sundanese is spoken mainly in West Java and Banten, in an area known as Tatar Sunda or Pasundan. It is also spoken in the western part of Central Java, around Brebes and Cilacap, and speakers have moved to Lampung, South Sumatra, and other parts of Indonesia. About 32 million native speakers represent roughly 15 percent of Indonesia's population.

The Priangan dialect, spoken around Bandung, Garut, Sumedang, Cianjur, Sukabumi, and Tasikmalaya, is the most widely spoken variety and the one taught in schools in West Java and Banten.

02

Related does not mean interchangeable

Linguist Robert Blust describes Sundanese as closely related to the Malayic languages, which include Malay, the language Indonesian is based on. Javanese, spoken mainly in central and eastern Java, is also Austronesian. All of them still have distinct sounds, grammar, vocabulary, and speaker communities.

Sundanese and Javanese both have elaborate speech levels, but the words and rules differ. Treat familiar-looking words as hypotheses, not guaranteed matches.

  • Label the language of every example.
  • Do not assume a Javanese or Indonesian sentence frame works in Sundanese.
  • Ask which language a family or community actually prefers.
03

Why conversations may sound mixed

Virtually all native Sundanese speakers also speak Indonesian, and many mix the two depending on topic, audience, and place. Code-switching is a normal multilingual practice, not proof that the languages are the same.

Scripts and history

Today most Sundanese is written in the Latin alphabet. Regional governments in West Java and Banten promote the Sundanese script (Aksara Sunda) on road signs and public places, and the Arabic-based Pegon script is used mainly in Islamic boarding schools.

Until about 1600, Sundanese was the state language of kingdoms such as Tarumanagara, Sunda, Galuh, and Pajajaran. Manuscripts such as Carita Parahyangan were written in the Old Sundanese script.
