Geography and community use
Indonesian is the national language used across Indonesia, including in schools, government, and media. Sundanese is a regional language spoken mainly in West Java and Banten. Virtually all native Sundanese speakers also speak Indonesian, so most conversations can move between the two.

Question words are a quick way to see how different the two languages are. Some match closely, and many do not.

Grammar patterns feel different
Sundanese has an elaborate system of speech levels with separate polite and casual vocabulary, which Indonesian does not have in the same way. It also uses nasal verb prefixes, an ar infix for plurals, and di- passives with ku.
| Pattern | Sundanese | Indonesian |
|---|---|---|
| not yet | Urang acan dahar. | Saya belum makan. |
| is not (a noun) | Buku urang mah lain nu ieu. | Buku saya bukan yang ini. |
| passive | Buku dibawa ku urang. | Buku dibawa oleh saya. |
| where do you live | Ari imah di beulah mana? | Kamu tinggal di mana? |
Watch for false friends
Both languages borrow from Sanskrit, Arabic, Dutch, and each other, so many words look familiar. Treat them as hypotheses until you confirm them with a speaker or dictionary entry.
- Label every example with its language.
- Do not assume an Indonesian sentence frame works in Sundanese.
- Ask which language a relative prefers at home.
| Word | In Sundanese | In Indonesian |
|---|---|---|
| lain | is not (casual, before a noun) | other; different |
| tahu | tofu (to know is nyaho or terang) | to know; also tofu |
