LEGAL1. Who we are
SpeakMore is a community-powered language learning application developed by Erstdev. This Privacy Policy applies to the SpeakMore mobile app for Android and iOS, the web app at app.speakmore.org, and related backend services operated for SpeakMore users.
SpeakMore (speakmore.org) is an independent product and is not affiliated with Speak (speak.com) or other similarly named services.
2. Data we collect
We collect only the data needed to operate SpeakMore, sync your learning progress, enable community features, and keep the service secure. Depending on how you use the app, we may process:
- Account and identity data: display name, email address (when used for sign-in), passkey credentials, account identifiers, and authentication tokens.
- Audio and voice data: short microphone recordings you submit for pronunciation practice, listening exercises, and community review.
- Photos and media: images you choose from your photo library for profile pictures, friend goals, and reward milestones.
- Learning and gameplay data: lesson completions, accuracy, streaks, experience points, ranks, challenge history, saved dictionary entries, and contribution activity.
- Social and community data: friendships, invitations, goals, rewards, reports, blocks, and moderation records.
- Device and technical data: device type, operating system version, app version, IP address, timezone, push notification tokens, and diagnostic or crash information.
- Subscription data: purchase and entitlement status verified through Google Play Billing, Apple In-App Purchase, and RevenueCat. We do not receive or store full payment card numbers.
3. How we use your data
We use personal data to:
- Provide language lessons, exercises, and progress sync.
- Enable community features such as translations, voice recordings, leaderboards, and friend goals.
- Operate ranked play, streaks, rewards, and Ambassador subscriptions.
- Send optional push notifications you control in Settings, such as streak reminders and friend activity.
- Detect abuse, cheating, fraud, and policy violations; review reported content; and enforce community safety rules.
- Maintain, secure, and improve the app, including troubleshooting and analytics needed to operate the service.
4. Legal bases (where applicable)
Where privacy laws such as the GDPR apply, we process personal data based on one or more of the following: performance of our contract with you, your consent (for example, optional notifications or certain uploads), our legitimate interests in operating and securing SpeakMore, and compliance with legal obligations.
5. How we share data
We do not sell your personal data. We may share data only as needed to operate SpeakMore:
- Service providers: cloud hosting, database storage, content delivery, push notification delivery, and subscription validation (including RevenueCat).
- Other learners: content you choose to make public, such as display names, profile images, community recordings, translations, leaderboard standings, and shared goals.
- Legal and safety: when required by law, to respond to valid legal requests, or to protect users and the service from harm.
6. Data retention
We retain personal data for as long as your account is active and as needed to provide SpeakMore. We may retain limited records after deletion where required for security, fraud prevention, legal compliance, or dispute resolution. Aggregated or anonymized data that cannot reasonably identify you may be kept longer for analytics and product improvement.
7. Your choices and account deletion
You can manage much of your data directly in the app:
- Update notification preferences in Settings.
- Remove or replace profile images and manage social connections.
- Permanently delete your account in Settings > Permanently delete your account, or use our account deletion page.
You may also request help with access, correction, export, or deletion by emailing privacy@speakmore.org from the email address associated with your account, or by submitting the form on our account deletion page. We will verify your request before processing it.
Deleting your SpeakMore account does not automatically cancel an active Google Play or App Store subscription. Cancel through Google Play Subscriptions or Apple App Store Subscriptions. See our Support page for details.
8. Children's privacy
SpeakMore is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. Where local law requires a higher minimum age (for example, 16 in some EU countries without appropriate consent), we do not knowingly collect data from users below that age.
If you believe a child has provided personal data to SpeakMore, contact privacy@speakmore.org and we will take appropriate steps to review and delete the information.
9. Security
We use administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards to protect personal data, including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), access controls, and secure credential handling. No online service can guarantee absolute security, but we work to reduce risk and respond to incidents affecting user data.
10. International transfers
SpeakMore may process and store data in countries other than your own. Where required, we use appropriate safeguards for cross-border transfers of personal data.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the date at the top of this page and, where appropriate, provide additional notice in the app. Your continued use of SpeakMore after changes become effective means you accept the updated policy.
